Grand ole’ Trail Party Planning for Fall 2009/Spring 2010
Dec. 22, 2008 – Planning a party…. you’re all invited! We’re planning a trail party(again), we actually started once in the spring of 2008. I feel after 10, 11, 12, years of planning, meetings, events, trail segment opens, trail clean up events, blood, sweat and tears; etc. that we should throw a party when we/it is done…the trail that is. With 34.5 miles of completed trail and multiple jurisdictions involved what, where, when, and how do we celebrate? HELP!
Is there one location that is more suitable than another? Is there a date the works better than others? Who should be the lead agency/entity/partner??
We have to wait until the last segment is built and open for use….will it be Boulder City’s segments 3 & 4 last to open; or will it be Henderson’s infamous segment #14? Will the last segment be complete in Fall 2009 or Spring 2010??? Maybe the last entity done throws the party? But we didn’t have an official hand shake deal on that one. There has been some thought about doing a progressive trail party with various entities hosting events on segments of the trail within their jurisdiction; thus making it a day long event with the finale held ________________ ? We could do a bike ride(s); running events; a triathlon event designed just for the celebration; hikes & walks; horse ride(s) where allowed; stroller walks; trail clean up; etc. basically something for everyone. Got any ideas? Please pass them along.
How will be fund the event? Do we find events sponsors? Maybe we sell tickets to participate?
Maybe we just end it the way it all started….over a cold “Bud” while tailgating after a great hike!
Comments Please! Hopefully there will be additions to this page with ongoing and developing ideas?

just had another possible idea for one event….create a multi-user triathlon event which is a team relay made up of all the possible legal trail uses; the more users the better and the more uses the better. Run the event on the entire 34.5 mile loop….you could have a dog/walker, walker, hiker, runner, jogger, roller-blade, mtn. bike, street bike, horse/equestrain.etc. you could come up with teams 9 to 10 participates….this wouldn’t be so much as a timed event, but maybe more like a poker run with style points…

Another idea suggested by Mrs. rmltman is do a three nights & four day walk/hike staying at a different hotel along the route. Suggested starting at Milo’s in Boulder City and hike to the Gold Strike Hotel first night(party), second day hike to the Ritz at Lake Las Vegas(party); third day hike to Railroad Pass Hotel(party); fourth day hike back to Milo’s and really party.
This may be an event designed for the hearty members of the advisory council as a way to celebrate 12-years of hard work.

Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area will soon be celebrating their grand opening of the newly constructed visitors’ center. While their event is still in the planning stages, at present they are aiming for a multi-day event (either a week long, or long weekend). Each day will have a variety of activities dedicated to the various use of the park. We can discus some of those details at the next meeting.

Upon further thought about how to celebrate…it occurs to me that each land manager and trail stake holder should take on a portion of the celebration and sponsor an event…ex. Boulder City could sponsor/host a 1K, 5K, 10K run event within its borders on the trail; Henderson could sponsor a horse ride along it equestrain portions of the trail plus a hike; National Park Service could sponsor a bike ride from border to border; SNWA could host Treatment Plant tours; Etc etc…. all events conclude by 11:30 a.m. followed by a BIG….
BIG BBQ AND AWARDS CELEBRATION ON THE GREENS LAKESIDE AT MONTE LOGO VILLAGE AT LAKE LAS VEGAS RESORT… have some bluegrass music/entertainment etc.
All participants and families in the days events are invited plus city officials, congressional delegation, and other VIP’s. Yes, there will be some speeches, too.

You can’t just ask for suggestions. That hasn’t worked. You need to send a letter to each person in charge of the entity that has a portion of the trail and ask them to appoint someone to serve on this committee. The mayor of Henderson, the Secretary of the Interior, The Bureau of Reclamation in Washington, the mayor of Boulder City, Clark County manager, etc. Then, they have to do it because they were told to do it by the boss. Then you need letters to potential sponsors seeking funds or products. Also, get a list of organizations who have received permits for events on the trail and ask them to give you dates so you can plan to include their events in the celebration. Contact the hiking, biking, and running groups and ask them to send a rep to serve on the committee. You could have a relay, with runners starting, handing the batons to bicyclists, who hand the batons to hikers, who hand them to equestrians, who hand them to people in wheel chairs, etc. etc. and cover the whole trail. That is a media event, and that is what you want. National media, not just the local wannabees. Talk with the State of Nevada to have the trail on the official state of Nevada map, Bill and I talked of this before. Yes, it is a lot of work, but that is what gets things done and three people can’t do it all. Yes, I can help. Ed

The above comments have developed ideas and provided good direction for the committee. The Advisory Council at their April field meeting have suggested that Railroad Pass Hotel makes a better on the trail celebration location. I have checked with John at RRPass and they are open to discussions and our plans. We did a National Trails day event here in like 2005 and it was fun and came off well except it was too hot.
If we could set up and schedule events so they end at the RRPass by 11:30 a.m. we could do a BBQ, programs, entertainment, awards, and speeches and a trails fair.
Timing may be such that we could received national recognition as a NATIONAL RECREATION TRAIL SPRING 2010 AND invite the Interior Secretary Salazar to make the presentation…that would get us media and national attention.
I guess we need to activate a committee and start meeting….Hmmm
