July 28, 2009 – the project manager advises that late last week portions of segment #4 around the Vet’s home was paved and linked up to segment #5. After only 30-days pavement is laid down. We are trekking east for a finish late summer.

June 29, 2009 - Boulder City gave the green light last week to begin constuction on the last two segments (3 & 4) under their jurisdiction. Work began almost immediately as the following photos indicate. Construction on segment #4 began over near the Veterans Home and Bootleg Canyon trail head on Veterans Drive. At the same time work also began on segment #3 at the National Park Service Warehouse on Nevada Hwy. I guess the plan is to work toward the center and meet up.
We’ll post progress reports and photos here as these last two segments get built.

Last week a few of us mountain bikers were alarmed at the location of the RMLT under construction around Bootleg Canyon. We all thought the RMLT would continue across the parking area off Veteran’s Memorial and along the existing dirt road. Everyone was a little shocked to see dozers cutting across the Bootleg – POW trail about 100 yards up the hillside. I followed the path that was cut to see that it cut across virgin desert to tie make its way around the Vet facility. Was this part of the original construction docs? If so, what is going to happen at the transition between the paved RMLT and the dirt POW trail?

The crossing of the POW bike trail is on the plans (Sta. 21+50) and is to
be graded so it can still be used after the RMLT is paved. I did tell the
contractor to make sure the rough grading didn’t create an unsafe situation
right now. If that has happened please let me know.
One thing they might not realize is that the State Veterans Home owns much more property than just what it sits on. The west end of the State property actually extends out past the Stonehenge Trailhead. The RMLT had to go so far north before turning east to go around the State’s property corner. We do not have permission to be on State land at that location nor do we want to be. The Trailhead and POW trail were built on State property without permission.
It is conceivable that one day the State will use all it’s
property causing the trailhead and the last 400+/- of the POW trail to be
moved. The mtn. bike group may want to consider ending the POW trail at the paved RMLT and using the paved trail down to the trailhead. Right now
unless we hear from someone the POW trail we be graded to cross the soon to be paved RMLT.

My two cents on this comment is that the RMT trail will allow/encourage more MTBers to enjoy the trails at Bootleg. Personally, I plan to ride to Bootleg on my MTB on the RMT to enjoy the trails without having to drive to the trail head. This trail will be a benefit to many MTBers who wish to do the same.
In the end more people will grow to love and respect the asset that Bootleg offers for fiitness which will ultimately benefit this recreational gem with improved maintenance, protection and long-term preservation from development.
